I witnessed a man’s coronavirus funeral when his family could not. This is his story.




The funeral was over so quickly that I almost didn’t get the name of the man inside the casket. It was Peter something. Cabe? Cane? The hearse was about to drive off so I asked the man sitting in the passenger seat, his brother, to spell it for me.“C-A-V-E,” he replied.Peter Cave. How did he die?“Lung cancer. He was 47.”That was all I knew about him.I was one of nine witnesses at his gravesite at Rosedale Cemetery in Orange on April 21 when he was laid to rest, reporting part of our massive feature chronicling 24 hours in New Jerseyduring the pandemic.
