San Francisco 49ers projected to have losing season by CBS Sports

Training camp will get underway for the San Francisco 49ers this week as rookies and veterans report July 25, but it’ll still be a while after that before the regular season gets underway and we start to find out how what kind of team the 49ers will have this season. Some have predicted the 49ers will have a team good enough to push for the postseason, but others, such as CBS Sports senior NFL columnist Pete Prisco, aren’t sold on the 49ers being a contender just yet.

Prisco posted his game-by-game predictions for all 32 NFL teams earlier today up through the Super Bowl. The 49ers unfortunately were not among those included in the postseason field as Prisco projects them to finish at 7-9.  Here’s a rundown of what Prisco predicted for each 49ers game, with our comments in parenthesis. Click here to see Prisco’s full predictions.

Week 1

San Francisco 49ers at Minnesota Vikings: Vikings 20, 49ers 17 (This will be a tough task for the 49ers, in particular for the offense as they match up against a talented Vikings defense. Prisco has the 49ers keeping it close but coming out of Minnesota with a loss.)

Week 2

Detroit Lions at San Francisco 49ers: 49ers 28, Lions 27 (The home opener comes against a capable Detroit team that should present a challenge for the 49ers’ passing defense. A 28-27 win would likely be a very entertaining way to start off the home schedule.)

Week 3

San Francisco 49ers at Kansas City Chiefs: Chiefs 23, 49ers 13 (The Chiefs start the season with two tough road games against the Chargers and Steelers before the home opener against the 49ers. There’s some defensive question marks in Kansas City this season, but Prisco has them holding the 49ers in check.)

Week 4

San Francisco 49ers at Los Angeles Chargers: Chargers 29, 49ers 18 (The Chargers are Prisco’s pick to win the AFC West at 11-5. He has the 49ers falling by double digits at the StubHub Center, although we’ll guess this game will be more competitive than that.)

Week 5

Arizona Cardinals at San Francisco 49ers: 49ers 17, Cardinals 13 (Prisco likes the Cardinals a bit better than the sportsbooks that are projecting them as one of the league’s worst teams as he picks them to finish tied with the 49ers at 7-9. He has the 49ers getting the better of them here in a close one.)

Week 6

San Francisco 49ers at Green Bay Packers: Packers 27, 49ers 23 (This is the first of five prime time games for the 49ers and arguably the toughest. Prisco, who also picks the Packers to win the Super Bowl, has the 49ers losing in a close one in what should be a fun quarterback battle between Aaron Rodgers and Jimmy Garoppolo.)

Week 7

Los Angeles Rams at San Francisco 49ers: Rams 21, 49ers 17 (This is the first home prime time game of the season for the 49ers, which comes against a Rams team that won in Levi’s Stadium last year in a wild 41-39 Thursday night game. Prisco picks a similar outcome here, albeit with much less scoring.)

Week 8

San Francisco 49ers at Arizona Cardinals: Cardinals 31, 49ers 21 (In a game many have picked the 49ers to win, Prisco has the Cardinals continuing their recent winning trend over the 49ers at home. The 49ers last won in Arizona in 2013.)

Week 9

Oakland Raiders at San Francisco 49ers: 49ers 27, Raiders 20 (Prisco like the 49ers to come out on top in one of the most anticipated games of the season among fans of both teams. This prime time game should be a spirited affair.)

Week 10

New York Giants at San Francisco 49ers: 49ers 21, Giants 18 (The Giants were lousy in 2017, as their 31-21 loss at Levi’s Stadium demonstrated. Prisco thinks the Giants will be in the cellar again at 6-10 but will keep things closer in Santa Clara.)

Week 12

San Francisco 49ers at Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Bucs 28, 49ers 20 (Coming off a bye week, the 49ers travel to Tampa Bay for an early East Coast start. Those games haven’t been kind to the 49ers in recent years, a trend Prisco predicts will continue.)

Week 13

San Francisco 49ers at Seattle Seahawks: Seahawks 30, 49ers 23 (The first matchup of the season with the Seahawks comes in prime time in Seattle. Prisco predicts the Seahawks to finish last in the NFC West this year at 5-11, but a night game at CenturyLink Field is never an easy environment.)

Week 14

Denver Broncos at San Francisco 49ers: 49ers 21, Broncos 18 (Prisco picks the Broncos to have a bounceback season in 2018 with a 9-7 finish and a Wild Card berth after finishing in the cellar last year. The 49ers get the nod in this game, however, winning a close one at home.)

Week 15

Seattle Seahawks at San Francisco 49ers: 49ers 17, Seahawks 13 (The second meeting of the year between these two teams ends in a win for the 49ers in a low-scoring affair. This win would snap a losing streak against the 49ers that dates back to 2013.)

Week 16

Chicago Bears at San Francisco 49ers: 49ers 21, Bears 18 (The Bears made quite a few offseason additions to improve the roster, but Prisco projects them to finish with one of the league’s worst records at 4-12. The Bears have the potential to finish better than that, but this should still be one of the more favorable matchups of the season for the 49ers.)

Week 17

San Francisco 49ers at Los Angeles Rams: Rams 30, 49ers 29 (The 49ers split with the Rams last season after winning in Los Angeles in Week 17 when the Rams rested their top players. Prisco predicts a close win for the Rams in this game that will result in a season sweep.)
